Thinking of Getting a Mac? (again)
In 2007 I blathered about “Thinking About Getting a Mac?” It is time to revisit the topic. The landscape has changed. If you want to read what I wrote then, you can find it here.
I have been pro-Macintosh since before you were born. Now, not so much. Two things have happened to loosen my pro-Macintosh stance.
The first is Windows 7. It took Microsoft seven tries to get it right, and now they have. Windows 7 makes your computer as easy to use as it is going to get.
Computers are very complicated to use nowadays, PC or Macintosh. Complexity is a fact of life in the 21st Century, lots of things are complicated, and we cope with it. For example: Pat Robertson.
But back to Windows 7. Windows 7 is easy to use. I recently watched an elderly woman switch from a Mac to Windows 7 without a single complaint. In many ways, Windows 7 is superior to the Mac, especially if you are a power user.
The second thing that happened to me is a broken iMac G5. It arrived at my place with no video. I popped it open to see what could be done (I do that sort of thing for a living you know) and was surprised to find it wasn’t made to be fixed. The components and circuit boards are enclosed in a plastic sealant that can’t be opened without breaking something. And this was not the first Mac model I’ve seen like this.
At least when a PC breaks, you can fix it.
So let’s summarize what we’ve learned so far, shall we?
-
* Windows 7 is as easy to use as a Mac.
* When some Mac’s break, they can’t be fixed.
* Mac’s cost a whole lot more than PC’s.
So why buy a Macintosh? Well, there is the problem of viruses and spyware and stuff, isn’t there? Yes. But:
-
* Mac’s get infected. I have cleaned malware from Mac’s on multiple occasions.
* The Mac is not inherently more secure than a PC. The reason there are fewer attacks on a Mac is because there are fewer Mac’s.
Still want to get yourself a Mac? They are cool looking. The Mac is a great computer. Just be sure to get all the extended warranty protection you can get on it because when it breaks you’re going to have to replace the whole thing.
And back up your files. But I don’t need to tell you that, do I?
