Porno No-no

The Nerd’s Words(sm) 2010 #7

When I was a kid and first discovering sex, “pornography” was Playboy magazine. I do not believe there were such things as “adult bookstores” at that time in the 1960’s, but the back pages of some magazines were peppered with ads for “marital aids” and such.

By the 1970’s, marital aids were for sale in downtown drug stores and “pornography” was Hustler magazine. There were magazines here and there in the fraternity house where women posed for photographs with their legs spread wide.

Then video tape recorders began making their way into homes, and along with them, video stores, and “adult” sections. Porno movies were easily available for “private viewing.”

Today we have the Internet with 4 million porn sites, up 17% from last year. Cable companies all offer “premium content,” and world-wide, pornography is worth $96 billion a year with 1/6 of it going to the US.

What’s disturbing about this, and it is truly disturbing, is what pornography has become: abuse, bestiality, impossible physical contortions with every imaginable combination of participants, genders, and genitalia. This is not sex, or sexy; and it certainly is not tender, loving, or intimate. Rather, porno today is cruel and degrading; hate directed at women.

And anyone with a Web browser can get it.

Just a few more fun facts before I get to the point. Hang on.

    • People are viewing hundreds of millions of pornographic Web pages a day.

    • Children are being exposed to pornography at an earlier and earlier age, and it is warping their understanding of their sexuality. Boys are learning that sex is something they do to a woman, often in as degrading a manner as possible.

    • Fully 10% of adults are addicted to pornography, according to one study, with more than a quarter of those addicted being women.

    • Pornography plays a part in half the divorces in this country.

    • Pornography is popular among returning war veterans and is a negative factor in their healing.

The conclusion I’m drawing here is we are awash in pornography and it is affecting us (and our society) badly.

What to do?

THE POINT –> Protect yourself

Today’s porn ain’t your daddy’s Playboy. We have kids and I want to protect them from porn.

I did something to the computers in my house that keeps them from porn sites. It’s very nerdy, but it works. (Well, I haven’t done extensive tests, but the porn sites I know about are now blocked.)

I could do the same for you.

That is, if you truly want to stop Internet porn.

I’ll even do it for free. Just call me up. I can do it over the wire and you can see for yourself that it works.

Perhaps I’m naïve, but I would hope that lots of people would want this done.
