Windows Search

Mac user? Sorry. This one is all PC. You might read it and gloat if you feel like it.

I am really angry at Microsoft

Those of you who know me know that I am a big supporter of Microsoft. What they do is very difficult and they succeed most of the time. And when they don’t, they fix it as quickly as they can. That’s more than I can say for General Motors.

But Windows Search makes me angry.

Windows Search is a free program Microsoft gives away to help you find documents on your computer by content.

By content?

For example, you got an email from Aunt Martha with a really good recipe for Rhubarb Pie; you remember getting it, but you can’t remember where you put it. But you do remember it had the word “rhubarb” in it. Windows Search allows you to quickly find the email by simply typing in the word “rhubarb” into the search window.

It accomplishes this by scanning through all your files and building up an index of every word; just like the index in the back of a book.

Good idea, no? Good idea yes.

Bad implementation.

Windows Search slows your computer down to a crawl. And this is the 4th version of it! You’d think by now they’d have fixed it!

If you’ve got Windows Search on your computer, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Programs (or “Add/Remove Programs”) and remove it.

If you need search by content, get yourself a copy of Copernic Desktop Search and install it. It’s free for home users, does a tremendous job, and you never even know its there.
